BetMGM Bound for Puerto Rico
BetMGM Puerto Rico – US Sportsbook spreads wings to Caribbean.
As one of the most prominent sportsbooks in the United Sates, BetMGM has been spreading its wings far and wide in the last three years. Just 24 hours after receiving a license to operate in Wyoming, reports indicate BetMGM is inking contracts across the water in the Caribbean. If all goes well, punters in Puerto Rico will soon be placing bets via the New Jersey-based sportsbook operator’s website and mobile app.
Under the capable arm of Roar Digital, BetMGM, in partnership with British Isles iGaming giant Entain, has already implanted its sports betting platform across 25% of the United States. The plunge into Puerto Rico will be BetMGM’s first launch outside the US mainland.
BetMGM Puerto Rico – Inking the Deal
Since MGM Resorts International established Roar Digital to run BetMGM in 2018, it’s always been the company’s goal to dominate the US sports betting market, both online and on land. It wasn’t until Puerto Rico lawmakers legalized sports betting in January 2021 that BetMGM began eyeing up big opportunities outside the mainland. With the legendary Island of Enchantment predicting a market launch in 2022, they saw no time to waste.
According to a company press release, not to mention Thursday’s headline in the Caribbean Journal, BetMGM has secured a deal with La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort. The 4-Star Marriott International property is the home of Casino Del Mar, where BetMGM will implant its land-based sportsbook. The historic luxury hotel caters to countless guests within its 709-room resort hotel. In addition to hotel guests, the oceanfront casino attracts many more of the average 2.27 million tourists who visit the majestic archipelago each year.
BetMGM Launch Subject to Regulatory Approval
Roar Digital Chief Executive Adam Greenblat asserts that the launch of BetMGM in Puerto Rico is “subject to regulatory approvals”. Realistically, however, it’s a matter of when, not if. The mobile-friendly sportsbook is on track to bring its feature-rich and socially responsible platform to the Caribbean nation, just as it has in 13 US jurisdictions to date; (Arizona, Colorado, District of Columbia, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming).
“This marks a major milestone for BetMGM as we share plans to bring our sportsbetting platform outside of the United States mainland for the first time,” Greenblat asseverates in a statement. “La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort is an ideal partner and together we look forward to bringing BetMGM’s retail and mobile sportsbetting experiences to sports fans across Puerto Rico.”
Puerto Rico Gaming Commission On Board
Orlando Riviera Carrion is the Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission. He is among the most avid proponents of sports gambling regulation in the unincorporated US territory. His delight in BetMGM’s interest in helping the government spur economic development through responsible gaming products was evident in his comments following the deal.
“This new project will promote and encourage the growth of the gaming industry in Puerto Rico, all while implementing a public policy that encourages the development of new jobs and maximizing the income and resources of the government of Puerto Rico,” said Carrion. “I trust in the success of this partnership and reiterate my total commitment to this initiative.”
